This model was created to assist the Architectural Practice convey their vision to both their client and also the local Planning Authority.
The curved roofs of the design laid over the complex levels of this old tin mine site in Cornwall created wave forms that mimicked the surf of the local bay.
The model helped visualise the concept and also assisted in the design of the site allowing the Architects to design ramped pathways and steps that conformed to UK building regulations
The model was formed from data taken from the topographical survey of the site. The slope of the land was modelled and then level planes were formed within the sloping land to match the Architects proposed site plan for the footprints of each of the holiday homes.
Paths were then added to align to the buildings entrances and joined with steps and ramps that conformed to UK Building Regulations.
The unique building designs were then modelled and added, along with vehicles, trees and pedestrians to complete the design.
The model was then rendered using a SketchUp plugin to create images that assisted the planning application.
The Architects also instructed a physical model of the holiday apartments as they felt this would be beneficial. A model was created mainly from cardboard with detailed elements formed on the 3D printer.
The trickiest part by far was the curved wave forming the roof. The curved rafters and cross members were laser cut and glued together to form the structure of the roof. This was then wrapped in thin cardboard to complete the roof
The finished model was completed with suggested 3D printed furniture layouts and thin plexiglass to form the windows.
The completed model allowed the architect and client to accurately understand the sunlight path that would be experienced inside the apartments by positioning the model in the same orientation as it would be on site.
